Dan Vahary is the driving force behind the rhythm of Belles' Suitors, bringing his passion for drumming and years of experience to every performance. Let’s dive into his musical journey, challenges, and what makes him the backbone of the band.

🎶 Musical Beginnings

Q: How did you first get into drumming, and what inspired you to pick up the drums?

I was about 5 or 6 years old, watching the Edison School Marching Band. I always found myself going outside whenever I heard the drums. Then, when President Kennedy got shot, I can still remember the sound of drums in my head. That moment piqued my interest, and by high school, I started playing. I had a snare drum, but everyone complained about the loud noise!

Q: Who are some of your biggest drumming influences?

I cut my teeth on Grand Funk Railroad and Led Zeppelin. I loved learning about dynamics, and those bands truly shaped my understanding of how powerful dynamics can be in shaping the music.

🤝 Joining Belles' Suitors

Q: What made you decide to join Belles' Suitors, and what has the experience been like so far?

I decided to join after hearing two singers at Shovelheads, and Jeremy was one of them. When Jeremy and Mark sing together, it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. That’s a feeling that’s hard to come by, and it was a big part of why I wanted to be part of the band.

Q: How do you approach your role as the drummer in the band, both in rehearsals and on stage?

I’m focused on laying the foundation. I aim to keep the rhythm steady and strong so that the rest of the band can shine. During rehearsals and on stage, it’s all about feeling the music and knowing when to hold back and when to hit hard.

Q: Can you share a bit about your creative process when it comes to writing or adding your drumming to new songs?

When I hear a new song, I try to feel the beat in my body first. Then, I focus on the dynamics of the song and how the drums can enhance the emotional tone. It’s a lot of instinct, trying to figure out what fits best with the band’s vision.

🎤 Performance & Stage Presence

Q: How do you prepare for live performances?

Well, I put on my shoes, underwear, pants, and shirt—and, of course, I like to take a bath before hitting the stage. It’s all about feeling fresh and ready to perform.

🥁 Drumming Style & Gear

Q: Do you have any favorite drum kits or gear that you rely on for live shows and recording?

I love my bass pedal. It’s a simple piece of gear, but it’s essential for getting that deep, steady beat. And when things need fixing, you can always count on duct tape!

💥 Band Dynamics

Q: How would you describe the overall vibe of Belles' Suitors?

I personally love it. I’ve never really done country or anything like it, but Jeremy and Mark blend their vocals so well. It’s really unique, and I just love the sound we create together. It’s a natural fit, and it feels great.

💪 Challenges & Growth

Q: What’s been the biggest challenge for you as a drummer, and how did you overcome it?

I had a stroke, and when I went into the garage to play afterward, I couldn’t play. A few months later, a buddy of mine called me, and I started playing again. It was tough, but I worked hard to regain strength, especially in my right hand. Now, every time I play, I savor every moment and every day I get to drum.

When I was a kid, my friend lost their drummer, and I was 'voluntold' to be their new drummer. That’s how it all started.

Q: Are there any upcoming projects or music you’re working on that you’d like to share with your fans?

We’ve got Battle of the Bands coming up on June 28th, 2025, at Shovelheads, and we’re excited to compete and keep sharing our music with fans!
